Upgrading to 6.0
Food Online 6.0 is a major release. Test the update on a staging site before you update a live store, and keep a backup.
Before you update
Section titled “Before you update”- Check that the site meets the requirements: WordPress 6.6, WooCommerce 9.8 and PHP 7.4 or later.
- Make sure Advanced → Delete Food Online options and transients on uninstall is off.
- Only Food Online Premium should be active. If Food Online for WooCommerce from WordPress.org is also installed, keep it deactivated.
What stays the same
Section titled “What stays the same”- Classic menu pages with
[foodonline],[foodonline2]and the other shortcodes keep working with your current settings. - Your settings, availability schedules, pickup locations and order data are kept.
- Address checks keep using the same Google APIs until you switch (see below).
What is new
Section titled “What is new”- Blocks. Food Online Menu Flow, Food Online Menu with seven designs, and Food Online Address Checkup. See Menu page and design.
- Checkout blocks. Shipping Mode with checkout fields per mode, and the delivery and pickup time pickers with a new Like the menu page style. See Checkout reference.
- Designs for the classic menu, and the shortcode attributes
template,layoutandcategory_image. See Classic menu and checkout. - Google APIs setting for current or legacy Google APIs. Google Maps markers use Advanced Markers.
- Blocks Guide in the settings, showing where the blocks are used and creating an ordering page or a block theme shop template.
Settings have moved
Section titled “Settings have moved”The settings tab is reorganized. The old sections map to the new ones like this:
| Before 6.0 | From 6.0 |
|---|---|
| Main Settings | Classic Menu & Shop Page |
| Menu layout and style | Classic Menu Styling |
| Menu Category Sorting | Shop Menu Categories |
| Delivery Features: selector, address validation, Google key | Classic Delivery Flow |
| Delivery Features: minimum order, admin column, best shipping method, pickup location placement | Checkout |
| Checkout fields | Checkout (classic) or the Shipping Mode block (Checkout block) |
| Pickup locations | Pickup Locations |
| Order Time Management, Time Picker, Availability Schedules | Same names |
| Advanced | Advanced, with clearer names |
Existing option IDs keep their values, so REST API calls keep working. See the option reference.
The old Delivery Mode setting (fdoe_enable_delivery_switcher) is split in two:
- Checkout → Checkout engine (
fdoe_checkout_engine): Checkout Blocks or Classic checkout. The old mode Only at blocks checkout page is now Checkout Blocks. - Classic Delivery Flow → Classic delivery selector (
fdoe_classic_delivery_switcher_mode): the switch, drop-down, only delivery, only pickup or none on the classic menu page.
Writing the old option still works and updates the new ones.
Google APIs
Section titled “Google APIs”If your site had a Google Maps API key before 6.0, Classic Delivery Flow → Google APIs is set to Legacy APIs, so nothing changes. Google projects created after March 2025 cannot enable the legacy APIs. To move to the current APIs, enable Places API (New) and Routes API for your key, then switch the setting to Current APIs. See Google APIs.
Checkout
Section titled “Checkout”Checkout → Checkout engine chooses between the Checkout block and the classic checkout. Check after the update that it matches the checkout page you use. With the Checkout block, open the checkout page in the editor and review the Shipping Mode settings.
Moving to blocks (optional)
Section titled “Moving to blocks (optional)”You do not have to move. When you want to:
- Create a new page with Blocks Guide → Create Ordering Page with Menu Flow.
- Choose a template and the modes, and compare with your classic page.
- When you are happy, link to the new page instead, or set it as the shop page with a Product Catalog template in a block theme.
Theme template overrides
Section titled “Theme template overrides”If your theme overrides WooCommerce or Food Online templates, check them after the update under WooCommerce → Status → Templates, and update outdated copies.
